MMA vs Soccer

I was watching PTI the other day when they brought up an interesting point that I would like to give my opinion about. Now that the US soccer team has shown that it is worth a damn, many are thinking that soccer or “futbol” is going to be on the rise in popularity. We already know that MMA or “Mixed Martial Arts” is on the rise in popularity by the growing numbers watching the pay per views. Which sport is more likely to become the most popular in the near future?

Soccer:

Logically you would think that since futbol is the most popular sport in the world and the U.S. being one of the most popular countries in the world that soccer would at least be average or better in its popularity. This is obviously not the case and here is why; soccer fields are big and require a ton of running, which leads to slow games. Like hockey and baseball, soccer is a low scoring game which does not keep things interesting. Each move a soccer player makes is only interesting to true soccer players. Just like a lot of people cannot watch golf because they don’t actually play golf so they don’t know how hard it is to spin a ball back like they do on the green. The reason I think hockey is more popular is because the gameplay is faster because the playing field is smaller. I look at the loyalty and intensity of futbol fans around the world and it reminds me of the NFL fans. It would be cool to have another sport here in the U.S. where there was such intensity, but I highly doubt soccer will be the sport to take over.

MMA:

Punches to the nose, knees to the gullet, choke holds, and blood. What is there not to like? With a fenced in ring and fights lasting less than 30 seconds sometimes, how could a viewer not watch every second? The fact that they are trained and skilled fighters and fighting each other by choice and not thrown out there like gladiators makes this sport legit. If they will let people watch them beat the shit out of each other then more power to them. MMA was still considered underground until the last couple of years and the popularity is growing faster than ever right now. When you have douche bags that couldn’t beat up Gary Coleman wearing clothes and hats with Tap Out on them, that’s when you know your sport has become popular. You don’t see them wearing soccer jerseys (unless they are Mexican or something). I don’t need to break down the reason why Americans like MMA because it is so obvious.

The only reason these two sports are comparable is because they are ‘up and coming’ sports. They have nothing else in common except for the fact that there are people competing in them. MMA is by far the most likely to become the next popular sport compared to soccer in my opinion.

  1. Yesterday Netherlands won over Brazil, Uruguay win against Ghana. And today, Germany win over Argentina, Spain win against Paraguay. Yes! Now who will be the champion? It will Spain.

  11. Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!

  12. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  13. I actually decided to create a simple movie about this, I would be pleased if you would possibly take a minute to look it and perhaps leave a message about what you think, I left the video link in the “website” field, hopefully you can get to it, thank you a lot

  15. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  17. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  18. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  22. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
