Boys and girls the Commish is out from his hibernation aka post super bowl blues. Once super bowl is over life in the football world is pretty much over.
As a young chap growing up in the rough streets of Waynesboro, & Winchester, VA I remember getting excited about the NBA All-Star weekend. You had all the big name superstars showing off their talents. There was Bird, Reggie miller, and mark price in the 3-point shoot out. Then the mack daddy of them all, the dunk contest, Dominique, Jordan, Kobe, Vince, and the list goes on. And then the actual game wasn’t that bad either, you had players who actually took the game serious and had good competition. Oh how the recent all star weekend has gone so bland, and unentertaining.
Those who are gifted enough to play collegiate sport know all too well of the coaching carousel that is in today’s sports. Here you get coaches showing up at your door step promising you of playing time and being coached by them for your collegiate career. So you pick your university or college based on the coach and coaching style, and think to yourself this is going to be awesome. And then before you start going to school you hear in the news….This Just In…..Lane Kiffin is now the Head Coach of USC or Pete Carroll is now the Seattle Seahawks Head Coach.
I know what you are thinking, this isn’t even a debate. It’s college football all the way, and I don’t discredit that at all. The Commish is all for anything football except the UFL, that’s like watching the Raiders vs. Browns. But the question isn’t which one is better it’s about taking what works from one and combining them to make a super baby ala Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen.
Since the Yankees won their 27th World Series in their historic history, a lot of pub has been made about them buying world series championships. I am no way a Yankee homer, but as George says “No one gives us the finger. We’re Yankees!” And this is the motto that most yankee fans believe, they are die hard fans who will do anything for their team. You hear a lot of other teams say that their fans are die hard, and this and that but yankees fans take it to the next level. They sellout every game, purchase ridiculously amount of merchandise, and bleed for the pin stripers.
The fans are the reason for why the yankees are able to do what they want when it comes to signing players. It is because their fans help by believing in the product. And if you ask any fans of their teams they wish they could sign the big name players and be able to compete year in and year out for a championship. I for one would love that opportunity for my lonely Reds. I know a lot of it comes down to the owner and they type of figures they have in their bank account. If that’s the case why not go after them to be your owner. The owner is one argument you hear about, and the other one is that there is more people in New York than any other teams. But why aren’t the angels winning more, why aren’t the cubs winning more. It doesn’t have to do solely on the population of the city as it does revenue, yankees generate the most revenue among the MLB franchises. Add that to a smart GM, and a owner willing to do what it takes to win that is the reason why most years they are the favorites. I would be more willing to purchase merchandise attend games, if my owner did what the yankeesdo. So that hatred you talk about with yankees buying world series sure does sound a lot like jealousy. Another thing that chaps me is when the BoSox fans complain about the yankees spending all this money, how can you complain about that when your team is in the top 4 spending also?
Regional Broadcasting is probably the biggest beef NFL fans have when it comes to games on regular television. But if you have been a fan long enough you’ve gotten over the fact that you’ll get some crappy games every now and then (ex. Skins vs. Bucs). But that’s not my biggest gripe with CBS or Fox, this is what is…………..
Volume 18 of what’s chapping the commish hits home with his Bengals. Past couple years Chad Ochocinco aka Chad Johnson has gotten a lot of flack about his game. Critics keep saying he is a prima donna, only cares about himself, doesn’t care about winning, and is a nuisance to the team. What is so wrong with someone actually caring about what he does and takes joy in his profession?
This volume of What’s chapping is the most disturbing for pro athletes. The past couple years we have seen fans cross that line of being a fan. There has been multiple reports of fans vandalizing athletes homes or robbing homes of athletes. This trend needs to be stopped or something fatal will happen.
Volume 16 of What’s Chapping the Commish has to deal with the start time of NFL’s prime time games. The start time of the NFL for sunday and monday night games need to be pushed forward some. I don’t know the statistics from when people start watching to when the game finishes, barring a complete blowout. But the start time of 8:30 is just too late, by the time the game ends it’s closer to 1130 1145pm.
As a diehard fan of the Cincinnati Bengals it is tough to watch their games every weekend. If they are not on TV, I have to travel to a bar to watch them. At times its not a problem, but it can be expensive over a course of a season. Most people when they go to a bar need 2 things, food and beer. Figure you have a couple beers plus wings, you are already 20 dollars in the hole. Add that up over a season if you watch at least half the games, it will add up to close to $200.00. And with today’s economy we need to be smart with our spending. I’d rather spend time watching the games at my house, then at a smoke filled bar with bunch of fans screaming at a different game.
